The term ethical vegan is often applied to those who not only follow a vegan diet, but extend the vegan philosophy into other areas of their lives, and oppose the use of animals or animal products for any purpose. That pretty much sums up who I am.
I get really angry and sad about the way we abuse, neglect, and use animals for our own selfish purposes, like for food our bodies don’t need, or for fur and jewelry. I have decided to take a stand for Animal Rights. And for me, those rights extend to all animals we share this planet with. I have a special passion for factory farmed animals, and “pets” who sometimes are treated well and as members of our families, until they are no longer “convenient” to us. Until we tire of them or until they become sick or old. I truly despise anyone who will turn a domesticated animal out of their home and then expect them to survive in a strange, often harsh world they have never known before.
There is a huge place in my heart reserved for all animals, and it would be hard for me to pick a favorite. I suppose if I was forced to choose, then a majority of my compassion would be reserved for cows, pigs, and cats. (Especially black cats who are often left to die in shelters because ignorant people deem them unadoptable or “evil” simply because of their color.)
Do I think I can change the world? YES! If people like me, who have a deep and abiding passion for ALL animals, don’t fight to make things better, who will? We can all sit back and hide and hope someone will stop the senseless killing of both farmed and domesticated animals, but if we don’t actively contribute to stopping the cruelty, then who will?
